IT’S HALLOWEEN SEASON!
My most favorite time of year. The Autumn weather, brief as it may be here in oppressively sunny Colorado, the changing of the seasons, busting out my hoodies and cool-guy jackets, and of course, the proliferation of all things spooky.
So to celebrate this month I’m going to be doing some album art for a few of my favorite horror themed musical indulgences. I have quite a few, actually, and while the obvious pick would be the Misfits, I’ve already done a shit ton of those.
SO FIRST IT’S BLITZKID’S ANATOMY OF REANIMATION VOL 1
Without a doubt, my favorite horror punk band (trust me, that’s a genre) outside of the Misfits is Blitzkid.
I could write a medium sized book about how the reformed Misfits in the 90’s launched an entire wave of horror punk bands, especially their album FAMOUS MONSTERS, but that’s a story for another time.
Blitzkid took that melody and horror movie theme and pushed it even further into the arena of undeniably, contagiously, catchy songs.
IN THE EARLY TO MID 2000’S
I was contacted by a local horror themed record label owner, who went by a ridiculously horror themed name, to do some graphic design work for promos and concert flyers, which at the time, I did, for very low pay and a shit ton of free music.
Lured to his dingy basement to accept my bundle of payment I thanked him for the opportunity and quickly made my exit. Included in my pile was the first couple Blitzkid albums, which I was immediately drawn to, crooning along with all the “whoa’s” and “hey’s.”
Anatomy of Reanimation Vol 1 (the “Vol 1” is almost a threat at this point as there’s been no Vol 2) is actually a compilation album featuring all reworked and re-recorded songs from their first couple albums. These are my preferred versions, and a collection of their finest songs. I celebrate their entire catalog but this is the one that I listen to the most, especially during this, the Halloween season.
